Course Description

So you enjoyed Session 1 of Trauma-Informed Interpreting Practise? Continue your learning with Sessions 2 and 3. 

This training will benefit you, whether working in a business environment  with Deaf professionals, patients in mental health, clients undergoing social services interventions and everything in between. 

This 3 part training will challenge and illuminate your ideas and understanding about the impact of trauma on your interpreting practise. Whether you or your clients experience trauma, this can change both your actions and responses to the demands made of you.

Explore how perceived acts of kindness could be boundary violations. The relationship between professional boundaries and the risk of burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue will also  be discussed.

From Maslow’s Hierachy to the importance of breathing, theory will be turned into practical tools during these sessions.

You will also learn about the body’s biological responses to trauma including:

  • The link between trauma and chronic medical conditions,
  • Vagus Nerve/Parasympathetic System
  • Chemicals and hormones in trauma

There will be space and time to examine strategies and interventions to address the impact of trauma on your interpreting practise 

 

Dr Wendy McIntosh PhD

Dr Wendy H McIntosh PhD has over 30 years’ experience as a psychiatric nurse and has worked in a range of roles as a clinician, researcher and educator. She is a passionate advocate for professional wellbeing and works with both individuals and groups.Dr McIntosh is based in Australia and is the perfect example of how an international classroom can be so beneficial.She provides us with a fantastic insight in research and experience of professionals in other fields. This is cross-disciplinary and cross-continent learning at it's best!The theme of professional boundaries is one area of practice that Wendy has been developing for many years. She recognises that when good boundaries are in place for everyone (professional client, family and colleagues) then well being is positively affected. Wendy is now Director of her own company, Davaar Consultancy, and she conducts workshops wherever there is an invite to travel to.
