Course Description

Interpreting in healthcare settings presents numerous challenges; however, these complexities increase significantly when interpreters are required to work with Deaf children. This webinar aims to delve into the qualitative research undertaken by Naomi as part of her MSc, exploring the many challenges that interpreters face when they work with Deaf children in healthcare settings and the strategies they employ to manage these demands effectively.

The session will be interactive, encouraging participants to reflect deeply on their experiences and practices. We will also examine how the Demand Control Schema (Dean and Pollard, 2013), can be utilised to support interpreters in making ethical decisions. This approach ensures that interpreters not only adhere to high ethical standards but also possess the vital interpersonal skills necessary to navigate the complexities of working in healthcare settings with Deaf children.

The goal is to empower interpreters with the knowledge and skills needed to overcome the challenges that arise in this domain and contribute to better health outcomes for Deaf children.
