Course Description

This workshop examines some of the issues pertaining to interpreting in healthcare settings. 

We will spend some time discussing the role and positionality of the interpreter and consider some of the challenges and issues that may arise in these contexts. 

Additionally, we will explore how translanguaging and employing a consecutive strategy can provide us with greater opportunities for effective meaning-making. Reflection and discussion will be key features of this training.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Participants will be familiar with consecutive interpreting and some of the challenges and benefits
  2. Participants will understand the notion of translanguaging and moving “beyond” language
  3. Participants will be able to identify strategies for effective meaning making
  4. Participants to have a greater understanding of some of the challenges and issues and our role when working in health care settings.


CPD points: Completion of this course will give you a minimum of 2 hours' structured CPD points. You will also be provided with a number of resources for you to gain at minimum a further 2 unstructured CPD points.

Russell Aldersson

Russell Aldersson has a dual professional role as a freelance sign language interpreter and language teacher to adult sign language users at the City Literary Institute. He has a masters degree in Applied Linguistics and a second in Language Teaching. His doctorate research with the Institute of Education has focused on translanguaging theory and meaning making in the context of a language class and how teachers navigate talking about metalanguage in BSL. He lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
