Artificial Intelligence and Interpreters - An Introduction to AI and How to Use It.

Course Description

Can AI actually be useful for me? Which AI platform should I choose? Is there a difference between ChatGPT and Gemini? Can it do more than just write emails? All these questions and more answered in this interactive session.

The webinar will delve into the vast world of AI and what it means for sign language interpreters. During this session Tom will explore the potential benefits and practical applications of AI tools for interpreters as well as consider how the risks around privacy, confidentiality and ethics can be safely mitigated. Whether you are a novice or an expert, this webinar will bring you up to date on the world of AI and give you the skills needed to take your AI use to the next level.

Learning outcomes:

Gain an understanding of the variety of AI tools currently available for sign language interpreters

Be able to evaluate what appropriate use of AI looks like within interpreter practice

Recognise the risks and limitations of AI for interpreters.

This webinar will be delivered in English and interpreted into BSL.

Tom Mould

Tom Mould is a Hertfordshire based BSL/English interpreter who qualified from UCLAN in 2012 with a PGDip in BSL/English Interpreting and Translation. With over a decade of experience across community, mental health, employment, and legal settings, he has long been an active voice in the profession through his volunteering, workshop delivery, and by speaking at conferences. Tom is a specialist in AI and its impact on the interpreting world and has recently enrolled on the MSc programme at Queen Margaret University, Advancing Practice in Signed/Spoken Language Interpreting where he continues to further his academic studies.
